this makes me ill.
And this is what my paper due tomorrow is about. Many of things we as Americans assume are Islamic practices are not at all. In fact, many of the things we assume are solely assumptions—nothing more. Much of what was depicted in the media as Islam and Muslims out to get the West, in particular the U.S., were ways to justify and support a war in the Middle East. The media capitalized on our stereotypes of Islamic culture to portray their values as threats to our very way of life and by doing so, many Americans banded together behind the President and supported a war that we actually had no just reason for. Saving Muslim women from their oppressors is not Islamic at all—it’s cultural—it’s the result of a patriarchal system which is not founded in the original version of Islam at all.
